Thyroid Ultrasounds

Greater New Orleans

30 minutes ᐧ $250

A thyroid ultrasound provides targeted imaging of the thyroid gland to help your provider assess nodules, enlargement, inflammation, or structural changes that may be contributing to symptoms or abnormal lab findings.

At Nola Diagnostic Ultrasound in Metairie, our scans are performed with high-resolution, safety-certified equipment, and every study is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist.

Thyroid Ultrasounds Near You

Thyroid ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the right and left lobes of the thyroid and the isthmus, the thin band of tissue that connects them. Your provider may order this exam to investigate a visible lump, abnormal thyroid function tests, or symptoms such as neck fullness, difficulty swallowing, or hoarseness.

Our registered technologists acquire images from multiple angles to document gland size, tissue characteristics, and the presence of any focal lesions.

What These Scans Can Show

A thyroid ultrasound helps identify and characterize:

  • Thyroid nodules: Size, margins, internal composition, and features that may warrant follow-up

  • Goiter: Enlargement of the gland or asymmetry between lobes

  • Cysts: Fluid-filled areas that may need periodic monitoring

  • Thyroiditis: Inflammatory changes affecting gland appearance or vascularity

  • Altered texture or blood flow: Findings that may correlate with certain thyroid conditions

  • Adjacent structures: Including the isthmus and nearby soft tissues

Ultrasound is also used for longitudinal monitoring of known nodules and for comparing new findings with prior imaging.

When You May Need One

Your provider may recommend a thyroid ultrasound if you have:

  • A new or enlarging neck mass

  • Changes in thyroid hormone levels (TSH, T3, T4)

  • Trouble swallowing or persistent throat tightness

  • Hoarseness or changes in your voice

  • Signs of thyroid enlargement

  • A history or family history of thyroid nodules or thyroid disorders

This exam is also useful for establishing a baseline before treatment or for monitoring existing thyroid conditions over time.

What to Expect During Your Scan

Your appointment will begin with a brief review of the area being evaluated. The technologist will then scan both thyroid lobes and the isthmus using a handheld transducer, obtaining images in transverse and longitudinal planes. Gentle pressure may be applied to better visualize deeper structures or assess nodule mobility.

The exam generally takes about 30 minutes. Afterward, a radiologist reviews the images and prepares a detailed interpretation, which is sent directly to your provider to correlate with your clinical findings and laboratory results.
