Soft Tissue Ultrasounds

Cysts and lipomas are among the most common soft tissue findings and are typically benign. Ultrasound distinguishes a fluid-filled cyst from a solid lipoma based on internal characteristics, which helps determine whether the finding can simply be monitored or warrants further evaluation.

Ultrasound can evaluate muscles and tendons for tears, strains, or inflammation, particularly following an injury or when pain persists longer than expected. Because the exam captures images in real time, a technologist can also assess the tissue during movement, which is useful for evaluating tendon function.

Localized swelling can result from a fluid collection, an abscess, or a hematoma following trauma. Ultrasound identifies the size and character of the collection, which helps a provider determine whether drainage, aspiration, or continued monitoring is the appropriate next step.

A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and the technologist moves a handheld transducer over the area using light, steady pressure. Patients with an existing injury or area of inflammation may notice mild, temporary discomfort when the transducer passes directly over the affected site, but this typically resolves as soon as the exam is complete. No needles or sedation are involved, and patients are able to drive themselves home and resume their normal activities immediately afterward.Can ultrasound detect a foreign object, such as a splinter? Yes. Ultrasound is often more sensitive than X-ray for identifying foreign material beneath the skin, particularly wood, plastic, and other substances that are not radiopaque. This exam is frequently used to evaluate a wound that has not healed as expected or an area of persistent tenderness with no clear external cause.How does ultrasound compare to MRI for soft tissue imaging? Ultrasound and MRI both provide detailed soft tissue imaging but serve different purposes. Ultrasound is faster, lower in cost, and captures tissue in real time, which is particularly useful for evaluating tendon function during movement. MRI requires a longer appointment and a higher cost, but can offer a broader view of deeper structures in a single study.
