If your healthcare provider has ordered abdominal imaging, you want answers that are clear, timely, and easy to act on. At Nola Diagnostic Ultrasound in Metairie, we perform complete and limited abdominal ultrasounds for patients across Greater New Orleans, delivering high-quality images, a smooth visit, and prompt reporting to your provider.
Abdominal Ultrasounds Near You
An abdominal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the organs and blood vessels in your abdomen. There’s no radiation and no downtime. Each exam at Nola Diagnostic Ultrasound is performed by a registered sonographer using advanced equipment to support accurate interpretation and coordinated care with your physician.
We offer two exam types based on your provider’s order:
-
Complete Abdominal Ultrasound ($250, CPT 76700): Evaluates the pancreas, liver, aorta/IVC, gallbladder and common bile duct (CBD), kidneys, spleen, and bladder for signs of disease or obstruction. This full-scope scan supports early detection and ongoing management of conditions affecting multiple abdominal organs.
-
Limited Abdominal Ultrasound ($235, CPT 76705): Focuses on specific areas of concern, typically the pancreas, liver, aorta/IVC, gallbladder/CBD, or right kidney, to identify changes or abnormalities related to your provider’s clinical question.
Both options are designed to help your provider confirm or rule out concerns efficiently so you can move forward with care.

When You May Need One
Your provider may recommend an abdominal ultrasound to investigate symptoms, follow up on an abnormal test, or monitor a known condition.
Common reasons include:
-
Ongoing or unexplained abdominal pain, bloating, or tenderness
-
Nausea, vomiting, or changes in digestion/appetite
-
Urinary concerns (including blood in urine) or suspected obstruction
-
Abnormal liver, kidney, or pancreas labs
-
Noticeable swelling in the midsection or suspected fluid
-
Post-treatment or post-surgical monitoring
These scans support early detection and help your provider better understand your abdominal health.
What Abdominal Ultrasounds Can Show
An abdominal ultrasound provides a clear view of your organs and surrounding blood vessels, allowing your provider to assess:
-
Gallbladder & bile ducts: Gallstones, inflammation, or blockages
-
Liver: Fatty changes, cirrhosis, cysts, or masses
-
Kidneys & bladder: Stones, cysts, swelling, or wall thickening
-
Pancreas & spleen: Inflammation, cysts, or masses
-
Abdominal aorta: Aneurysms or other vascular findings
Because the scan shows blood flow in real time, it offers valuable insight that supports faster, more confident next steps.

What to Expect
Your abdominal ultrasound is a simple, noninvasive procedure that takes about 30 minutes from start to finish:
-
Before the exam: Fast for 8 hours, drinking only water. Fasting helps your gallbladder and nearby organs appear clearly on the scan.
-
During the exam: A small amount of gel will be applied to your abdomen, and the sonographer will move a handheld transducer across your skin to capture images from multiple angles. You may be asked to shift position or hold your breath briefly to improve image clarity.
-
After the exam: Most patients feel only light pressure during the scan and can immediately resume normal activities, including eating and drinking. A radiologist will review the images and send a detailed report to your provider for timely follow-up.
Each scan is designed to be comfortable, efficient, and coordinated closely with your healthcare provider for accurate results.
